I have a licensed version of EmEditor v24.5.3. While searching for unused programs for disk cleanup, I discovered that EmEditor is keeping backup copies of old version of the installer, going back to 2023. These copies are kept in the c:\ProgramData\Emurasoft\EmEditor\updates folder. The obsolete files are in the “update64_14” directory and in “help_en”. Screen shots below:

    Files in update14_14 folder

    and here:

    Files in the help-en folder

I have no interest in obsolete versions of EmEditor, and I do not want to revert to an older version. Is it okay to delete these older versions of EmEditor from the ProgramData folder?

Also, should the failure of EmEditor to automatically delete old versions of itself when it auto-updates be construed as a bug which can be fixed?

It sometimes becomes useful to keep old installers. As I wrote in our FAQ (https://www.emeditor.com/support/ – No. 6.), if the error message that says “The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.” appears while trying to update or install EmEditor, first locate the installer of the previous version. The installer of the previous version can be found in one of the C:\ProgramData\Emurasoft\EmEditor\updates\update… folders.

However, if you are sure you don’t need old versions, you can safely remove those files. I could add an option to remove old versions of installers in future versions.

If I ever want to revert backward or downgrade to previous versions of EmEditor (which I cannot imagine why I would want to do that), I think there is a support section of the web site that offers previous versions of EmEditor.

Hmmm . . . I just looked at https://support.emeditor.com/en/account/downloads, and it does not go back as far as some of these backups do. So maybe it is not as easy to downgrade one full version number.
