When opening a file, EmEditor detects the file as a Western European even though it is actually a Japanese (Shift JIS) file.

Go to Tools | Properties for Current Configuration. In the File page, if Detect All is checked, EmEditor will try to detect the encoding, but this may fail if the file is small.

To change the encoding for the current document, go to File | Reload.
